Arne Slot doubles down on Mo Salah contract saga with fresh Liverpool admission

Mo Salah’s contract will expire in the summer, with Liverpool boss Arne Slot refusing to comment on the future of his star player despite mounting concern he could leave Anfield

Arne Slot says Mohamed Salah’s future “doesn’t worry” him as the saga over his contract rumbles on.

Salah has once again been a key player for Liverpool in what is Slot’s first campaign in charge. The attacker has fired the Reds to the top of both the Premier League and the Champions League as football enters the hectic festive season.

But the Egyptian’s contract will expire at the end of the season, with Salah free to speak to overseas clubs from New Year’s Day. While Salah recently hinted he was more ‘out than in’ with regards to his future, it was reported at the weekend that he has signed a new deal.

He scored the winning goal in Girona on Tuesday night and maintains his place as one of the first names on Slot’s teamsheet. But the Dutchman is refusing to give anything away when it comes to the future of his key man.

“It doesn’t worry me, we just accept the situation as it is. They play at a very good club and do very well at the moment,” Slot said on Friday when asked about the futures of Salah and duo Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contracts also expire in the summer.

“I work with a lot of quality players over here and Mo is definitely one of them. He is one that should score goals. He is also part of the reason we keep as many clean sheets as we do.

“We’re going to face Fulham now. We should have a much better performance against them to get a result. You can only take points from these games if you have quality yourself. Against Arsenal, they only conceded from a set-piece.”

Salah once again proved key as the Reds claimed a narrow win over Girona in midweek

Salah has scored 16 goals so far this season and will be hoping to add to that tally against Fulham this weekend. Two of his goal came in the thrilling draw with Newcastle just over a week ago, after which Slot made his importance to the team clear.

“It is difficult for me to predict the long-term future, the only thing I can expect or predict is he is in a very good place at the moment. He plays in a very good team that provides him with good opportunities and then he is able to do special things,” the Reds boss said.

“What makes him even more special for me is before we scored for 1-1 you thought, ‘He is not playing his best game today,’ but then to come up with a half-hour with an assist, two goals, having a shot against the bar and being a constant threat, that is something not many players can do if they’ve played the first hour like he did.
